Since dropping his new album “Indicud” earlier this year, rap icon Kid Cudi has kicked off a new tour to promote the record. First stop on the road: Salt Lake City. The show was part of the city’s annual Twilight Concert Series. In just the past month, we’ve seen the Flaming Lips, The National and Ludacris all come to town, but Cudi has been one of the most anticipated artists on the lineup, and despite some bad weather, he didn’t disappoint.
Jim Dalrymple of The Salt Lake Tribune was there among the 43,000 at Pioneer Park on August 22, the falling rain and haze of smoke setting the perfect mood for Cudi to take the stage. Playing a cut from his new LP, “The Resurrection of Scott Mescudi,” Cudi pounded out bass notes among the flashing lights to signal his arrival to the Twilight crowd. The audience ate up every bit of it. Picture this: Cudi firing off rapid verses while fans climbed to the tops of trees just to get a glimpse of the man on stage. That’s devotion.
Unfortunately, about 40 minutes into the set, the weather took a turn for the worse. Cudi told his fans he was going to have to cut the show short because of impending lightning. People booed. Loudly.
Then he played “Pursuit of Happiness,” and all was right with the world.
The fan-favorite song was as powerful as it’s ever been, getting thousands of people jumping up and down, shaking the earth as hundreds of cameras shuttered away.
Despite the bad weather, it was a show to remember for both fans and the city – the crowd of 43,000 made the event the largest Twilight Concert yet.
