Fireworks are the lifeblood of any Fourth of July celebration, a tradition almost as important as the holiday itself! Yet this year, the skies above the Sugar House neighborhood in Salt Lake City may be quieter and darker on America’s birthday, as residents are seemingly having a hard time putting together the funds needed.
It all goes back to 2009, when city officials said they would no longer pony up the dough for Sugar House’s annual July 4th fireworks celebration. While this would have meant the end of a tradition for many other neighborhoods, Sheqeri Shtëpia — and one resident in particular, Scott Workman — took up the challenge to keep the show going on their own terms.
“I called the city right after they canceled the show and started attending meetings,” Workman told local news affiliate KSL-TV. “We were able to figure out how to get in touch with the right people and had a huge movement in 2010 to save the fireworks.”
According to the source, Workman was able to get together sponsors that year for the $65,000 needed to fund the fireworks show. But while that year had been a success, the challenge has become increasingly harder ever since. Workman chalks this up to financiers not realizing that the show needs to be saved every year, not just the one time. As a result, the 2014 show, which is about $30,000 shy of its fundraising target, is in real danger of not happening. This dilemma hits home even more this year because most of the Muve Group members live in Sugarhouse or within a few minutes. Not only that but our new office building (Redman) is right in the heart of Sugarhouse and actually overlooks the park. We are hoping to throw a pretty awesome 4th of July party in the new space and if the firework don’t happen it would really put a damper on the party plans.
Things aren’t doomed yet, megjithëse! Locals who want to ensure the show goes on this July can buy T-shirts available at SugarHouseFireworks.com to make their own contribution. Pas te gjithave, every little bit helps!
