New York has the Guggenheim and MoMA. Boston has the MFA. D.C. has the National Gallery of Art. Los Angeles has the Getty Center. You’d think with how everyone always talks up these places, they’re the only museums in the country. But Salt Lake is no slouch either. The Utah Museum of Fine Arts (UMFA) is one of the biggest cultural institutions in the nation, much less the state, and it doesn’t nearly get the recognition it deserves. Though if the lineup of contemporary art this fall is any indication, that may soon be a thing of the past.
Slug Magazine has highlighted some of the hottest exhibits coming to UMFA for the season, and it sounds like a pretty legit selection for art lovers, cultural aficionados or people just looking to kill some time on a weekend afternoon. Check ’em out:
- Under Pressure: One of the big-ticket items the museum has to showcase this year, this exhibit will put on display a smattering of works from the private collection of the Rockefeller modern artist Jordan Schnitzer. Paintings, sculptures and some crazy experimental works that blur the lines between photorealism, minimalism and other buzz words that are better seen in person rather than read here.
- Martha Wilson: An artist more concerned with gender-based art, smashing a lot of the conventions and preconceived notions people may have about feminism and the human body, this stuff is a great complement to Schnitzer. The two galleries would make for an excellent double feature on a museum visit.
