San Diego may like to think it has the monopoly on all things pop culture and geek conventions, but those days may be coming to an end sooner than they think if yesterday was any indication. On Thursday, սեպտեմբեր 5, Salt Lake kicked off its first ever own Comic Con, drawing thousands of comic book, fantasy, science fiction and television enthusiasts downtown. Although this was only day one of a four-day event, the convention already looks to be a big one and could soon become a big player on the national con scene.
Desert News talked to some of the convention goers, interviewing those uber-passionate cosplay crowds and taking stock of all the ridiculously impressive costumes and prop replicas on display. For fans, this kind of gathering in their own neighborhood is a dream come true.
“We’d been wanting to go to a Con for a long time, but it’s just hard getting out of town,” attendee Jack Tripp told the publication. “Having it here in Salt Lake is way easy.”
The show has already brought in a ton of high-profile guests. What better names for the original Salt Lake Comic Con than a bunch of famous Hollywood originals? Adam West, the original Batman; William Shatner, the original Captain Kirk; Lou Ferrigno, the original Hulk; and David Prowse, the original (and in my mind, only) Darth Vader.
According to the con’s organizer, Dan Farr, որ 40,000 tickets already sold – many of which are in the hands of local Utahns – have put the show on track for the biggest first-year Comic Con ever. Go big or go home, Salt Lake.
