Utah Undie Run set for October 9th

Ah, nothing like a good old-fashioned undie run. Stripping right down to the bare essentials, jogging around the city with thousands of strangers, all in the brisk cool air of autumn. What could be better?

Yes, I’m being totally serious! Don’t knock it until you try it – and in a couple weeks, you can! Salt Lake City’s world-famous, much-beloved Undie Run is officially set to return this year on October 9. “World-famous” isn’t just me blowing smoke, either. Last year, 4,000 people participated, setting a new Guinness World Record (why Guinness is tracking the biggest crowds of people running around in their underwear is a topic for another post).

“I didn’t start this to do anything more than to have fun […] and to do what is really a good charity event where we get thousands and thousands of articles of clothing donated,” Nate Porter, the run’s organizer, told our local news affiliate FOX 13.

Although there won’t be any music or DJs to liven up the runners, the event is entirely free of charge. Can’t beat that price.

The whole concept of running in your underwear in public notwithstanding, there is just one tad bit of potential awkwardness: The event is scheduled to run at the same time as the Church of Latter Day Saints’ General Conference. Porter insists that the date was entirely a coincidence, and the result of police forcing him to seek an extra permit, which delayed the run twice, first from September 6 to the 22 and now to October.

“[But] as long as we’re peaceful about it, there shouldn’t be an issue,” Porter added, speaking with The Salt Lake Tribune. After all, it’s just a charity fun run.
