“[That song had] died and gone to heaven,” James Taylor told a crowd of 21,000, praising the backup vocals from the Mormon Tabernacle Choir following an amazing performance of “Lonesome Road.”
The song was one of a dozen highlights that Taylor sang with the group. It was a treat, to say the least, to see the music legend bring “his own brand of laid-back adult contemporary music” – in the immortal words of “The Simpsons” – to Salt Lake and even better that he was able to perform with the choir. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir has spent years playing with musicians like Sting and has long tried to work with Taylor, but the two could apparently never get their schedules to synch up. Friday, September 6, was the date when the stars were finally in alignment to make the partnership happen, and the wait was well worth it.
The American music icon was in town to participate in the 30th anniversary for the Tanner Gift of Music concert series, and marked the occasion by singing some fan-favorites like “Fire and Rain” and “Carolina In My Mind” with the 360-person choir. And the audience sang along with them, because hey, it’s James Taylor – how often are you going to be able to see James Taylor live? (The answer: Not often enough.)
The turnout was great, the addition of the choir was beyond cool, but when you come right down to it, it was James Taylor playing some of his best right in our own backyard. If you live in Salt Lake, it was a weekend to remember. And if you don’t, then maybe less so.
