Best places for stargazing

On our website, we like to talk up the nature enthusiast’s paradise that Salt Lake – and even just Utah in general – is, and for good reason. Living in Salt Lake City has tons of perks, not the least of which is having stunningly beautiful views right in your own backyard. Never mind all the great trails to hike, rivers to lunch by or mountains to ski down, sightseeing itself is a huge feature here.

In many major cities, lights drown out a lot of the stars above, so that at best you might make out the North Star and a couple constellations and at worst the sky is just an ugly haze. Not so in our state, though. Would-be astronomers or people who just like a good view have some of the best spots for stargazing around here. The Salt Lake Tribune put together a list of the top 10 locations, and here are a few of their picks:

  • Emigration Canyon: A quick four- or five-mile trip on the canyon road will land you in one of the best places to check out the stars. Lay out on the roof of your car and make sure to bring a blanket – it can get a little cold here, even on summer nights.
  • Natural Bridges National Monument: The perfect lookout spot for those wanting to get a glimpse of the Milky Way stretch out across the sky.
  • Salt Flats: Far from the city, this open desert gives you a chance to just be alone with the stars.
