Salt Lake City’s Olympic legacy, 12 years later

Can you believe it’s already been 12 years since Salt Lake City hosted the Winter Olympics? Talk about time flying! But for those of us living in Salt Lake City, the memory of those games is still fresh in our minds – probably because this city has gotten so much out of them!

Plenty of host cities for the Olympic Games end up building a slew of brand new, multi-billion dollar venues that fall by the wayside as soon as the competitions end. These buildings are abandoned, fall apart, become overgrown with weeds and basically turn into citywide sources of depression. Not so in Salt Lake City, though. In fact, our Olympic legacy still lives on today!

As the Olympics’ official website itself details, SLC’s “world-class facilities for skating, hockey, curling, bobsleigh, ski jumping and many other activities” have found new leases on life in the years since, being used for over 60 World Cups, seven world championships and countless other sporting events. Not only have these venues been used for tons of new competitions, they also make excellent training grounds, with some of the planet’s best athletes and their coaches coming here to hone their skills.

This “living legacy,” as the Olympics’ website puts it, has had a huge economic impact too. In the years since the 2002 Games, Utah has generated $1 billion in sports events and seen a 42 percent jump in ski visits – and that boost in tourism has added hundreds of millions of dollars on annual basis. Not only that, but the infrastructure we had to build for the Games has left us with more hotels, better ski resorts, improved public transit and long overdue utility upgrades. It’s basically been a win-win from every possible angle.
