Salt Lake commemorates 7th Annual Susan Sandoval Run

Salt Lake City has proud traditions we like to uphold every year, but one of our more solemn ones is the Susan Sandoval Run for Ovarian Cancer. Like any event championing the cause of researching and combating cancer, this one is rooted in sadness – Susan Sandoval was an LDS and Primary Children’s Hospital nurse who fought and ultimately lost a battle with ovarian cancer. Despite the grief of that loss, her memory lives on every fall, in our annual Susan Sandoval Run, held in Sugarhouse Park.

Renee Chase, HR Manager of the Department of OBGYN at the University of Utah began organizing this event seven years ago and brought in over 400 people willing to donate their time, money and feet to helping raise funds for the Ovarian Cancer Education, Awareness and Research Fund. The group is dedicated to helping raise awareness about risk factors and symptoms for ovarian cancer and other gynecologic diseases, as well as pushing the boundaries of cancer research. In the years since, more and more people have come out to help this good cause and this year was no different. Over 800 gathered in Sugarhouse Park at 8 a.m. on September 7 to, as either teams or individuals, make their contribution to fighting ovarian cancer.

Muve was out there too, with “Team Candace” running and donating not just for the cause but also in memory of a good friend we lost to cancer three years ago. Ovarian cancer is a disease that hits close to home for us. Like hundreds of others in town, it’s our sincerest wish that better methods of prevention and treatment – and even a cure – are found some day, which is why we get out there to run every year.
